Coffee Break at Metropolitan Cafe – Hutchinson, Kansas

by Todd on October 6, 2009

I am here now, it is about 8:00pm on a Tuesday night and the place is full with a variety of conversations flowing around me.  Some people on laptops, some  reading and some just chatting away.  There are a variety of games, books and magazines available to the clientele and the coffee is outstanding.  There is literally not a stone left unturned.

Here is a list of things that I have come to appreciate about this cafe and realize are must do’s for a coffee shop.

  1. A power strip that goes around the entire cafe.  You can plug in anywhere
  2. Deep purple and maroonish red are very warm colors and work really well together.
  3. A great mix of comfortable chairs, small tables and high tops provide a great variety of sitting and meeting arrangements for small, medium and large groups.
  4. An oval counter works really well in the selling, making and delivering of the coffee drinks.
  5. Soft, cool coffee music is a must have as background sound to the cafe.
  6. A small kiosk of coffee mugs, display books, etc. is a great decoration and space breaker.
  7. Internet service that is free and easy to access.
  8. A display of tea is also a great decoration as well as functional for the sale of tea.  Although I haven’t seen anyone buy any tea, the display is great.
  9. Offering a couple of chess sets and other games as well as used books and magazines adds more useful decoration to the cafe.
  10. A raised floor in the middle of the cafe offers an easy separation to the floor and furniture layout.

I am so appreciative to have had this location available to me during this stay.  It has made me vitally aware of how intrinsic the local coffee shop is in this age, not only for the locals but also the travelers.

If you find yourself traveling anywhere close to the town of Hutchinson, Kansas, take a moment and visit the town and the cafe, you won’t be disappointed.

Do you have a Metropolitan Cafe experience or a favorite coffee house in your area?  Anything to add to the list?
