I recently set up a couple of new sites that required a home page that stayed the same all the time and a couple of other pages for information. More of a content management site then a blog. I still wanted the ability to continuously add pages/posts like a blog but I needed some static structure to the site as well. I had seen some sites like this, built with Thesis, but I could not quit figure out how to do it.
So, like many other things I have done over the past couple of years of being an online marketer and website creator, I searched and scoured the internet for the answer. It came from a couple of sources and then of course I figured a few things out on my own or realized a slightly better way to do the process that fit my needs.
I have created a short tutorial on how I did it:
With a few quick page set ups you can create a static home page and a blog section to handle your blog posts in your Thesis WordPress site.
The process is simple but does require WordPress 2.3.1 or later):
- Create a new page that will become your home page. It does not matter what you name it. You will be able to still use the “Home” tab in your navigation menu (Make sure it’s a page, not a post.)
2. Scroll down to the Discussion options and remove the checks next to Allow comments and Allow pings.
3. Click the Publish button to publish your new page.
4. Create another New Page for your Blog Page. This will be a blank page. Name it “Blog” or something like “Your Name Blog” . Go ahead and Publish the page.
5. In the Settings Group for in your WordPress Dashboard, click on Reading
6. Under Front page, click the Static page option.
- Choose the pages to use for the static home page and blog posts.
- Open the Front page list and choose the page you want to use as your static home page.
- Open the Post page list and choose the page you want to use to display your blog posts.
- Save your changes.
If you’re using Thesis, you need to choose to have new pages displayed as tabs in the navigation bar:
You will also choose to Show home link in nav menu. This is how you will still have a navigation menu that says home but your actual home page might be called something else.
Remember you can move the nav menu choices around to put them into a different order and you can also change the menu title names if you want.
Please leave me some feedback if you found this post helpful.

Hallo Todd
thanks for your tutorial. Helpful. However I would have some more questions, and would be grateful for your answers.
Do you know how to remove the “comments are closed for this entry” that appears when I uncheck the boxes for the comments and pings?
how to remove the title from the static page?
Best wishes
Martina
Thank you! Thank you! You just saved me $300! I had a graphic designer scheduled to move my blog to a different page. I did a quick google search and your site came up! I am amazed that it took me all of 5 minutes to do this!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Shay

I have setup a static page and a posts seperately and made my static page as home page
I need it to display the latest post in full in the bottom, or atleast the summary. Please help.

Hey dude!
I was feeling the need to research my problem on my own, rather than make a phone call to a good friend of mine who already knows how to do this (Guess who that is). So, I entered “How to move my Blog in Thesis.” Your article came up on page one, third down. I saw your URL and was tickled black. It did answer my questions, so, thanks again PAL!
This was very helpful! Thank you, Todd.
I have some social media buttons in the post-box-bottom hook, but I don’t want these to appear in the static page. How do I remove them from only the static page?
Thanks!
Hello.
i’m looking all over for a way to display a full single-post in my homepage.
do you have any idea on how to do that ?
thanks,
Oren
I currently use Joomla for one of my main sites and am finding it very cumbersome to deal with. I have been using WP as a blog platform for some time but like the idea of using it as a static website.
I am going to investigate moving away from Joomla and using this set up as a trial for my site. If I needed other functionality like a download area for files etc. how would I accomplish this effectively.
Thanks for the walk through I am definitely going to have a go at this now, plus I have theses theme.
Regards,
Clive.
Clive, I am glad you are giving WP a try and I am sure with a little bit of practice you will be able to achieve the results you are looking for and probably a whole lot more. I am constantly learning every day.
I am not sure exactly what you are asking about the download area. There are a number of ways you can set up different areas of your site to allow for downloading. i.e. you could set up a separate page to handle your downloads. You could use a widget in the sidebar to allow for some downloads or you could even set up a password protected page to only allow people you choose to have access to the page.
One of the ways I use this is to provide the password to people that opt into my list. I provide the password in an email to them – with a link to the page – they then go to the page and download the files I have for them. Let me know if this answers your question or not.
Thanks Again
Todd
I want to make a static one column home page with a separate blog page TWO column for posts in thesis. Is that possible? If so how?
Steve, you can’t do that with Thesis as it is normally used. There are a couple of workarounds though. Probably the easiest is to create an html/css home page that does what you want it to do. You will set this up in a different directory in your file structure and have your thesis blog set up in a sub-directory with a menu tab on the home page linking to the blog. You would set thesis up as it is defaulted. In other words you would not use this tutorial to set up a static page you would just run Thesis as it comes out of the box and set the column structure up with the 2 column choice.
Thanks so much. This was very helpful.
Hi, Todd,
I know you have been in touch with me on email and I tried to leave a reply to the comment above but could not because there seems to be a bug. I would like to catch up with you and talk about what you mentioned in your mail. I added you to skype and am awaiting your response. Let me know when you are free.
Kind regards,
Clive
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! The only part I wasn't sure about was how to get my blog posts to show up under the tab 'Blog'. It took me about 3 minutes to do this.
Wow, you really made that easy.
I was afraid it would take hours to figure that out.
Thanks so Much !
Super tutorial – thanks so much for sharing it! Found it incredibly helpful for setting up this new site http://communityblogging.com.au/
Planning Queen,
I am glad you found the tutorial useful. I love the site you created. Very clean and I love the navigation buttons you created. Very non thesis looking. Great Job!!!!
