Most people don’t aim too high and miss. They aim too low and hit.
~ Bob Moawad
One of the biggest obstacles to going large with your dreams is dealing with all the negative influence you receive about “it’s probably not possible” or “I don’t know if you should be doing that”. Usually your close friends and family are the ones giving you that feedback, and they are hardest to ignore.
One example of this in my life is an instance with my wife. Now, my wife usually supports me, don’t get me wrong. This particular situation is unique however, because I remember vividly how my confidence swayed back and forth after she told me, what I was getting ready to do, probably wasn’t a good idea.
What I was going to do was to get a picture of a friend of mine receiving a token of time from his 3 sons. The picture was going to be taken in a ceremonial type of situation that was not really conducive to taking pictures, as that would disturb the intimacy of the moment. I had planned on taking them without a flash and quickly enough so no one would really know I was taking a picture of the moment. I was going to present the picture as a gift to the father as a memorabilia of the moment he and his sons shared.
After my wife told me it wasn’t a good idea I started thinking, “maybe I shouldn’t do it”. What if the gift is rejected? What if people think it is rude? What if I ruin the intimacy of the moment? These and many more negative voices filled my head.
What did happen is I decided to follow through with my plan and take my chances. To this day the father continues to thank me and let me know that his wife was brought to tears when he showed it to her. It now hangs in their kitchen.
If I would have allowed the negative thoughts to over rule my plan, none of that would have happened.
The truth is, and we have all heard it and the stories to back it up – virtually anything is possible. From Thomas Edison in his quest to invent the light bulb to Colonel Sanders and his chicken recipe. Perseverance paid off.
What would you attempt if you knew you could not fail?
Write down a dream that you would love to pursue if you absolutely knew you could attain it.
Big ideas can be overwhelming. The way to handle the – Too Big To Handle – ideas is to break them down to bite-sized chunks.
One of the best ways to overcome the problem of the negative talkers is to surround yourself with people who believe you can. Share your goals – but share them with people who can help you attain them.
Hang out with people that can help you succeed.
Here is a great test for choosing friends:
Will spending time with this person drag me down or lift me up?
Will they make me want to be a better person?
A happier person?
A more successful person?
Will they help me achieve my most important goals?
If not, find some friends who will.
